Since the inception of the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (known then as the American School of Osteopathy) in 1892, women have been members and leaders within the student body. This is significant, as during this period of time, there were few socially acceptable career paths available for women. Society directed that women train for housewive duties and therefore pathways for higher education, including attending medical school, were not available. Women students at the American School of Osteopathy established the Delta Omega sorority in 1904. The objective of Delta Omega was the further study of Osteopathy as a philosophy, a science and an art. Delta Omega eventually changed its name to the National Osteopathic Women Physicians Association (NOWPA). NOWPA has been formally recognized since 1988 as a service and social organization dedicated to the support and education of women in the Osteopathic profession. The goal is to provide the common link to achieve personal and professional goals, primarily using networking, with role models and fellow members, service and outreach activities, and; providing personal and professional educational opportunities. |
